Car-Type Vehicles

For many people I know, having a car seems closely intertwined with their sense of freedom – freedom to go where they want, at any time they want.  In my life, it’s the opposite.  I feel free without a car – free from car payments, maintenance and traffic tickets.  And I have the freedom to park my bicycle practically anywhere.

Transportation Queries

What am I already doing to be more earth-friendly in transportation?  Describe any particular burden or pleasures associated with this way of arranging my life.  What changes in transportation would I like to adopt in the future?

Some specific questions to use in evaluating transportation use:
How do I arrange my life so that I spend fewer carbon units going places? Do I need to travel to this place? Can I live closer to work, or do more work at home? Can my children walk or ride their bikes to activities, or do they need to be driven? Can I drive less? Fly less? Live without a car? Do I see owning a car as increasing or decreasing my sense of freedom? How?

  • Flexcar: (description from Wikipedia) Flexcar members choose a rate plan and pay an annual fee. The fees cover gasoline, insurance, maintenance and cleaning. The vehicles are mostly late-model sedans, with other types, such as light trucks, hybrids, and minivans, also available. Each vehicle has a home location, a reserved space either in a parking lot or on a street, typically in a highly-populated urban neighborhood. Members reserve a car by Web or telephone and use a key card to access the vehicle. The reservation must specify the pick up and return time, so others can schedule the vehicle. Vehicles are returned to their home location.  www.flexcar.com
